Epic landscapes and healthy cuisine are some of the things you can expect for a holiday in South America. Among the many fascinating areas of the continent is Patagonia: a lush region that separates Chile and Argentina and surrounds the legendary Andes Mountains.

The remote southern tip of South America is full of dramatic peaks, glassy lakes, dense rainforests and vast deserts. It is also home to many once-in-a-lifetime experiences, from world-class stars to wonderful wine tasting. You could even extend your trip to Patagonia by going to nearby Polynesia for a relaxing beach break or visiting the enchanting Easter Island.

For those who want to protect the planet while traveling, the pristine landscape of Patagonia makes it a prime destination for more sustainable holidays. One thing that definitely goes hand in hand with sustainable travel in Patagonia is booking accommodation in one of the amazing ecological shelters.

From luxury camping by the lake to comfortable mountain villas with hot tubs and wood stoves, here we take a look at some of our favorite eco-lodges in Patagonia.

Located in Torres del Paine National Park on the Chilean side of Patagonia, Explora is the ideal eco-friendly hotel for peace and quiet. The shelter where it is located is about 2,000 square kilometers and is full of glaciers, high peaks and beautiful waters that can be easily explored by boat or kayak.

Guests can choose suites at Explora Patagonia, all with plush furniture and stunning views of the majestic mountains. The serene decor is combined with the lack of technology, with the ethos behind the hotel to go there to turn off and be united with nature.

Explora also has many activity options open to its visitors. This includes horseback riding through golden meadows, stunning guided hikes and excursions to discover 100+ unique Torres del Paine bird species.

Another green hotel in Patagonia ideal for a more ecological getaway is the Tierra. It is also located in the Torres del Paine and its harmonious design allows it to be combined with the dramatic landscape that surrounds it.

The Tierra is ideal if you are looking for a luxurious eco-friendly spa experience. Spend a day pampering yourself at the hotel’s Uma Spa, which features an indoor pool with floor-to-ceiling windows and views of Masse Massif. Sustainability is at the heart of the hotel and contributes greatly to conservation efforts within the National Park.

When you are not hanging out at the spa, you can take advantage of the many excursions, from kayaking on the lake to wildlife bikes. Come in the evening, dine in the cozy hotel restaurant serving rich Patagonian cuisine.

Those interested in taking a step further than an eco-lodge in Patagonia should definitely book a stay at Patagonia Camp. The luxurious campsite is located on the shores of Lake Toro in Torres del Paine and offers the opportunity to stay in a private Mongolian style.

Complete with warm décor and stellar glass portholes, some of Patagonia Camp Jute also has an outdoor jacuzzi. The 20 yurts are connected by wooden sidewalks that weave through the forest and all have great views across Lake Toro.

In addition to relaxing in the yurt and sleeping with the relaxing sounds of nature, you can take advantage of organized camp tours for all ages and abilities. Lovers of unique cuisine will also love the gourmet outdoor cooking of Patagonia Camp, which uses local Chilean products.

Another green hotel in Patagonia that is worth having on your radar is Awasi. Another shelter located in Torres del Paine, is completely carbon neutral thanks to the acres of indigenous forest it protects and preserves.

Secluded and intimate, the Awais features just 12 traditional villas, all of which have been carefully designed to blend in with the countryside. They also hang on wooden stilts to reduce their impact on the environment. Each has beautiful views of Lake Sarmiento and the area’s famous pampas meadows. A larger guest house houses common areas and the Awasi restaurant that grows its own seasonal produce for all the delicious local dishes.

Stay indoors and enjoy outdoor adventures with a private riding, walking or cycling guide. Awasi is truly an oasis, with zero neighbors in addition to the excellent local wildlife.

“Patagonia is amazing because of the variety it offers. You can hike alone in the shade of the Fitz Roy, see the incredible Perito Moreno Glacier and enjoy the stunning scenery and mountains of Torres del Paine National Park. It’s a long journey to get to the southern tip of the planet – but it’s worth it. I look forward to visiting again. Above all, there are amazing luxury accommodations and accommodations that allow you to enjoy after a day of exploring. “
