Rooting for Your Home Team in Person? Here’s What You Need to Know.
In California, a color coding system determined by local contamination rates sets limits. Until recently, Los Angeles County was at the strictest purple level, which would limit the attendance of 100 fans to the LA Galaxy and LAFC football games and the Dodgers baseball games.
However, the county has since moved to the red rung, which allows 20% capacity in sports venues. So, when the Dodgers play the home opener on April 9, 11,200 fans will be available at Dodger Stadium. Orange County also moved to the red, which will allow 9,000 fans to show up at Angel Stadium. So did San Diego County, giving the OK to 10,000 Padres fans at Petco Park
And so it goes by chessboard all over the country. Colorado Rockies can fill their ball to just over 42% of capacity, or 21,000 fans who must wear appropriate masks. In Missouri, the St. Louis Cardinals can fill up to 32 percent of their stadium, and in Pennsylvania, the Pirates of Philadelphia Phyllis and Pittsburgh can fill up to 20 percent. But in Michigan, current regulations require the Detroit Tigers to accept only 1,000 fans, although the team says that number could increase.
In Oregon, state officials have not yet cleared the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns men’s soccer teams to allow fans in Providence Park. This also applies to 13 NBA basketball teams, although that number could shrink in the coming days. .
Indeed, the NBA has perhaps the most uniform policy on Covid protocols. In the 17 arenas currently admitting fans, no one is allowed to sit on the court and must be at least 15 feet behind the team benches. Fans with seats 30 meters from the court must take a negative Covid-19 test within 48 hours of the game or take a quick on-site test and are not allowed to eat.
The NHL has also made adjustments from the rink after a few outbreaks at the start of the season between players and officials in closed games. Plexiglas panels were removed behind team benches and penalty boxes to promote air circulation. And in 18 of the 24 ice rinks in the United States that will now or soon allow their presence, fans are not allowed to sit behind benches and penalty boxes or along the glass.
And then there’s Texas…
Then there is the Lone Star situation, where Governor Greg Abbott recently lifted all Covid-19 restrictions.
The Texas Rangers did this to allow full capacity, and 40,518 seats, for the first three games on the new retractable roof baseball court in Arlington – the first team in North America to do so. There will be no protocols other than a masked rule in these two show games on March 29th and 30th and the opening of the season on April 5th. Subsequent games will have less than full but still undefined ability.
