Beginner’s guide for the symptoms of growing up
Rumor has it that you start to become an “adult” when you are 18 years old. But for the beginning of adulthood (whatever that means), your 18th birthday does not feel any different from a normal day. You do not have sudden back pain or complain about rising gas prices. Instead, divert your thinking to good things in life, such as lottery tickets or cigarettes. Only months later do you begin to show signs of “aging”. These symptoms go unnoticed at first, but for your analysis, I have created a beginner’s guide to the symptoms you may experience from adulthood.
You get excited to do simple things like make a good cup of coffee or light a candle.
This is first on my list, because it is the symptom I am most guilty of. Whenever it is night, and I have a little work to avoid, nothing makes me happier than lighting a candle and relaxing with a book and some tea. Although, in fact, I end up scrolling through TikTok, the relaxation of tea and candle aesthetics is truly unparalleled. It’s also something my Nana does every night.
You often say “When I was their age…” when you see younger children on their tablets.
Let me define the scene. It’s Christmas, Hanukkah or any other family friend gathering and all your little cousins or friends of friends are stuck on their tablets playing the next modern game. Before you even think about how you hated hearing this as a child, words are already out of your mouth and in the universe. He does not take them back now. “When I was their age…” This sentence can be completed in any way – by saying that you played basketball or kickball on the street or just the idea that you did not have a tablet to play in the first place. No matter what you say to try and save yourself, it definitely puts you in the “adult” category among everyone who has heard it.
“Save” any TikToks that provide financial advice or housing advice.
This is difficult because I did not realize what I was doing until recently. But slowly, when the reality of student debt and renting your next apartment really comes into play, your TikTok page for you becomes magical about financing your next home or even investing. And, little by little, you encourage the algorithm by “saving” the TikToks for later λο even though you never went back and looked at them (or maybe that’s just me).
Get excited about the next shopping offers.
Become a real adult when you are excited about the next sale (bonus points if it comes to reusable containers or cleaners). To be perfectly fair, the sales of clothes and shoes are completely different. But also, being excited about Black Friday for the three $ 5 lingerie / sock definitely puts you in the same park as the older women playing bingo on my street.
Send a message to your parents first. And they leave you reading.
This hurts the most: realizing that you and your parents have exchanged roles when it comes to staying in touch and texting each other. Your texting threads are now full of various TikToks that you thought were “hilarious” or stories about what happened on your morning walk and responses from your parents ranged from “LOL” to nothing.
Although the development can be frightening, you can prepare yourself by recognizing these symptoms. Do not worry, everyone is getting older.
